Preliminary internship and practical semester

This page provides information about the pre-internship and internship semesters in the bachelor's degree programs and the diploma programs that are being phased out.

If you have further questions, please contact the respective contact person directly.

Pre-practicum

Students who start their studies in SoSe 2021, WiSe 2021/22, SoSe 2022 or WiSe 2022/23 can start their studies without having completed a pre-study internship already. However, the required 12 weeks of pre-internship must be completed no later than advancing to the fifth semester of study.

In WiSe 2020/21, SoSe 2021, WiSe 2021/22 and SoSe 2022, the engineering internship ("Praxissemester") can also be completed without a full pre-study internship.

Practical semester

In the practical study semester, students should be introduced to the work of an engineer by means of concrete tasks, which they work on largely independently. The assignments should come from one to three of the following five areas:

  • Development, design, project planning (focus on "mechanical engineering"; pure project management tasks such as preparing reports/protocols, managing resources or schedule management may not predominate)
  • Production preparation, production planning and control
  • Assembly, operation and maintenance of machinery and equipment
  • Testing, acceptance, quality
  • Technical sales

Weekly work hours are equivalent to a full-time job (d.h. the usual number of hours for a full-time job in the internship company – depending on the internship company min. 35 to max. ca. 40 hours per week).

For all students who have started their studies from SoSe 2020 SPO220 and newer):

The duration of the compulsory internship (engineering internship) is 85 working days. Absence and sickness days do not count towards the 85 working days, whereby up to five absence days for which the student is not responsible do not need to be made up. The student must prove that he/she is not responsible for the interruption.

For all other students, the following applies:

The duration of the compulsory internship (engineering internship) is 20 weeks, with courses accompanying the internship at the faculty one day a week during the lecture period (s. Degree program schedules). Therefore, students who participate in the internship should be released by the internship company for this one day per week during the lecture period. A confirmation of this can be issued by the internship officer upon request.

In summary, this means that the student is always full-time in the internship company during the lecture-free periods and is only released from work for one day during the lecture period, provided that he/she takes part in the courses accompanying the internship.

For students whose internship is further away, z.B. perform abroad, the attendance requirement is waived one day a week. you are always working full time in the company and the internship duration is reduced to 18 weeks. In this case, the courses during the practical study semester are to be made up or, alternatively, moved forward if the prerequisites under section D. are fulfilled.

Internships lasting longer than 20 "active" weeks will not be approved by the university.

Certificates stating that the internship is mandatory will be issued by the University, Examination and Internship Division, only if needed.

Days absent due to illness, vacation (z.B. due to exam preparation or company vacations) etc. are to be made up as a rule. If the number of required vacation days is already known when the contract is concluded, the resulting longer period can be recorded immediately in the contract with a corresponding note. If the educational objective is not impaired, interruptions may be waived if the student is not responsible for them (z.B. days of illness) and the days of absence in a practical stu¬dents' semester due to the interruption do not exceed a total of five working days. The student must prove that he/she is not responsible for the interruption.

The student applies to companies for an internship that meets the educational requirements of FK03 (s. Section A.).

The student receives a contract offer signed by the company, stating the beginning and end of the internship, a meaningful description of the intern's activities, and the name and academic title of the direct supervisor (at least diploma holder). Ing. or Master) must include. In his/her own interest, the student should already ensure at this stage that the activities described in the contract offer correspond to the stated training requirements and that the prerequisites are met.

A list of companies with which internships have been previously approved, maintained by the internship supervisor, is available to students in the Moodle course "Engineering Internship with Internship Seminar, F2100, L2100, M2100, FAB, LRB, MBB, Westenthanner" (PW: Internship). There the student can check if his/her company is listed. In these companies, the responsible employees of the Examination and Internship Department decide whether to approve the internship contract themselves or to forward it to the Internship Officer for review.

The student uploads the contract offer to his/her PRIMUSS account for approval.

After the internship contract has been submitted to him/her, the internship officer will check whether the contract offer can be approved and will notify the Examination and Internship Department of this decision, where it will then be checked whether the admission requirements have been met (in accordance with Section D.) takes place.

The approval of their internship contract can be found by the students in their PRIMUSS_note sheet.

If the student needs a copy of the internship contract with an approval note (ex.B. for submission to the internship company), he/she must notify the Examination and Internship Department (preferably via the PRIMUSS account).

The internship can now be started.

At the end of the internship, the company issues a certificate with the period of the internship and with a meaningful description of the activities performed and a personal assessment. The report must also include the days of absence due to illness/holidays, etc. show.

This certificate is to be uploaded by the students to their own PRIMUSS account. An internship report does not have to be submitted by students who started their studies before SoSe 2018 (SPO116 and older). Only for students who started their studies from SoSe 2018 (SPO118 and newer), an internship report is mandatory again.

The internship officer checks the certificates and grants/ does not grant/ grants with conditions the recognition of the internship. In the event of non-approval or approval with conditions, the Examination and Internship Department will inform the students accordingly.

Before the start of the internship, the following requirements must be met, depending on the SPO valid for your own studies:

Advancement regulation into 5. Study semester (internship semester) for students who have started their studies from SoSe 2018:

  • The pre-study internship has been completed
(does not apply to students who started their studies in the winter semester 2020/21; for them, no pre-study internship is required)
  • All modules – except for one module – of the first two study semesters have been passed
  • In the modules of the third and fourth semester at least another 30 ECTS credits have been acquired

Advancement regulation into 4. study semester for students who started their studies between SoSe 2016 and WiSe 2017/18:

  • The pre-study internship has been completed (after a change in the SPO for the 2021 semester, the pre-study internship must now be completed by the end of the 4th semester). The internship must be completed in its entirety by the end of the first semester)
  • To advance from 3. ins 4. All modules except for two modules of the first two semesters of study must have been successfully completed (excluding AW subjects)
  • An additional regulation for the advancement to the 5. There is no study semester (practical semester)

Advancement regulation into the 5. Study semester (internship semester) for students who started their studies up to and including WiSe 2015/16:

  • The pre-study internship has been completed
  • All modules of the first two semesters have been passed
  • At least 4 modules from the third semester of study have been passed

Each student informs him/herself which SPO applies in the individual case. In case of uncertainties, this can also be inquired in the area of examination and internship.

In the semesters SoSe 2020 up to and including. There is an exception for SoSe 2022: According to the ASPO valid in these semesters, the internship must be completed by the end of the fourth semester. APO is an entry into the internship semester already in the 4. semester is permissible.

E. Visits of professors to interns

Professors visit interns in the companies on a random basis. The visiting professor prepares a visit report.

The internship report, which is mentioned in some versions of the SPO, is omitted for all students who started their studies before SoSe 2018 (SPO116 and older).

For students who started their studies from SoSe 2018 (SPO118 and newer), an internship report is required. To successfully complete the internship semester, the internship report must also be passed. Submission and evaluation of the internship report take place within the framework of an internship seminar. For more details, see the corresponding Moodle course, which can be accessed via the link provided in section C. The following requirements must be met in order to successfully complete the internship semester.
